Arizona’s Current Jobs, Workforce & Economic Opportunity Landscape

Although recent months have exposed weaknesses, Arizona’s jobs and workforce landscape reflects steady job growth and rising wages. However, increases in the cost of living, especially in housing costs, continue to outpace earnings for many workers. Population growth — long a driver of the state’s economic expansion — has begun to slow, creating questions about the pace of future labor force growth.

The labor force continues to expand as more residents participate in work or actively seek it, and employers across sectors report ongoing demand for skilled workers. As high-tech and fast-growing industries continue to grow, Arizona has an opportunity to strengthen its long-term economic outlook by both ensuring residents can access the skills and credentials needed for emerging jobs and by attracting qualified workers to the state. Educating Arizona residents, including students in our K-12 and post-secondary institutions, has long been a priority that Arizonans consistently identify as essential to the state’s future prosperity. In addition, communities support a continued focus on improving livability, high cost-of-living, and other quality-of-life measures to allow the state to attract qualified workers.

Average annual wages in Arizona were $70,406 in 2024.

The average unemployment rate was 3.6% for Arizonans in 2024.

Total non-farm jobs grew by 1.3% in Arizona in 2024.

62% of working-age Arizonans were either working or actively looking for work in 2024.

Factors Unique to Arizona

Arizona’s economic trajectory is shaped by shifting population trends, evolving labor demands, and an economy that continues to diversify. These factors create both opportunities and challenges as the state works to ensure the workforce can meet current and future needs.

Rapid Job Growth

Rapid Job Growth

Arizona’s economy has grown rapidly since statehood, often creating more job opportunities than the local workforce alone can fill. As a result, the state has long relied on new residents from other parts of the country to help meet workforce needs. This growth supports economic expansion but also increases demand in sectors such as healthcare, construction, education, and advanced manufacturing.

What Arizonans Prioritize

Arizonans are united in wanting to maintain the state’s quality of life through strategic, long-term economic planning. Survey findings show broad agreement among Arizonans on the importance of maintaining essential services, strengthening long-term planning for growth, and ensuring that education, workforce development, and job market support widespread economic opportunity. Voters also consistently emphasize the need for public investments that reflect community priorities.

More Quality Jobs and Economic Opportunity

Arizonans consistently express a desire for more high-quality jobs that offer stability, competitive wages, and opportunities for advancement.

  • 35% of Arizonans identify “more good-paying jobs” as one of their top three issues important to the state’s future.
